On Recent Vintages + Current Releases
After a rainy winter in Oregon, the Spring of 2024 was slow to arrive in the Willamette Valley. We saw an early bud emergence from the grapevines on March 29th - yet managed to dodge some frost damage bullets. As our buds turned to shoots and began to stretch for the sky, a massive coronal mass ejection on the Sun flung a very strong magnetic storm towards Earth. This storm electrified rocks, soil, and vine - and gave a most incredible display of the Aurora Borealis on the night of May 10th. The cold Spring season continued, and flowering did not begin until June 12th. When the heat arrived this summer, it arrived in full force. Several successive days of 100+ degrees in early July set records and quickly desiccated our topsoil. Temperatures turned cooler than average in mid-August and even provided unusual rain showers- a much welcome change in the weather as wildfires burned more acres of land in Oregon this year than any since reliable records began. Rain showers were also sporadic through September and our fruit rolled in beautifully this year. We began picking for sparkling wines on September 8th and concluded with our last Pinot Noir pick on September 28th. All of our 2024 wines are now resting in barrel and I am over the moon to have this Aurora vintage tucked in safely.
The 2024 Vintage
Forecasters predicted cool weather for the Spring of 2023. As a result, we pushed back our grapevine pruning until mid-March to ensure buds would not be damaged by frost. Our decision to prune late was sound, and thus a late bud break safely emerged on the 27th of May. Primordial grape clusters (called inflorescences) followed the shoot emergence, and they began to flower on the 10th of June. Heavy rains hit our vineyard on June 18th - a moment when our uppermost hillside was flowering. These strong rains suppressed the fertilization of our grape berries on that slope and thereby reduced our potential crop load. Ultimately, this higher section of the vineyard produced a smaller crop yield but resulted in very concentrated fruit. We sailed through the growing year with very little fungal activity in the vineyard. It was a hot, dry summer - and the hottest August on record. Rolling into the harvest season we had expected to be harvesting our Pinot Noir on the last week of September. However, after rain showers arrived on August 31st and refreshed the vines, the weather turned dry and hot once more and pushed our grapes to ripen more quickly than we had expected. Everyone in the Willamette Valley moved quickly to pick - and the harvest was compressed into about two weeks from start to finish. A mad rush that ended quite beautifully.
The 2023 VINTAGE
The 2022 VINTAGE
The vintage of 2022 is a story of a harvest saved by climate change. A warm March resulted in an early bud break, followed by a punishing late spring frost that brought cold damage to our vines. Many vineyards throughout the valley were completely devastated - but thankfully the damage at Bracken was limited to about one-third of our early-budding Chardonnay vines. Cold, wet weather clung to our region for several weeks during the spring of 2022, hampering growth in the vineyard and creating a perfect storm for mildew. Thankfully, as hot weather returned in mid-June it became clear that our crop set was excellent. Fall rains typically return to the Willamette Valley in September - and certainly by mid-October. However, we became the beneficiaries of the hottest and driest harvest season on record. Climate change saved the day and allowed our fruit to be harvested at peak maturity before cold-wet weather returned to Oregon.
